Montreux Jazz Festival - Diana Krall, George Benson. July 18

(Review by Ron Ainsborough.)
I am a huge fan of Diana Krall, having many CDs and DVD's by her. So I'm au fait with  her repertoire. This was the first time I'd seen her live and you got what it says on the tin. I Thoroughly enjoyed her set of 1.30. hours, first class singing, musicianship etc, and as predicted or expected none of her music makes me sit up and say Whow!!!! I would nearly go so far as to say she is now on the fringes of the jazz spectrum, just a debatable point though. I'm not taking anything away from her it was a lovely one and a half hours.
The second set featured the George Benson Band who did a set reprising most of his vocal hits of the past many years. Not unlike Diana Krall, he too has largely retreated from the jazz face. His following of fans in the hall were all behind him and he was obviously very popular. I have a couple of his 60 's recordings where he plays great jazz guitar, but his repertoire does not get remotely close to that side of his musical life now. Faultless singing and the musicians with him were top quality but it did not hold my attention. Consequently we retreated to the bar long before he finished and watched him on the big screens outside the main hall.
A pleasant night of music though.
Roll on Montreux  2014 , we love the place!!!!!!

Submissions for review

Whilst we appreciate the many emails, texts, messages and other communications we receive requesting album/gig reviews on BSH, regrettably, we are unable to reply to them all other than those we are able to answer with a positive response.
Similarly, CDs received by post will only be considered if accompanied by sufficient background material.
Finally, bear in mind that this is a jazz-based site when submitting your album.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
